FOCUS GROUP INTERVIEWS

Summary of Focus Group Interviews:
The people I interviewed are within the focus group of horror films as they are all horror film fans. I interviewed two girls and one boy reinforcing the fact that horror films are aimed towards both genders although they are slightly targeted more towards females as they are curious and naive. This means that the horror trailer must appeal to both genders through having both male and female actors. But it must appeal to females slightly more; perhaps through the use of the colours. Along with this, the focus group ages were 17 and 18 which connotes that people aged 17 and 18 find horror films the most appealing. These ages also relate to the survey monkey which presents the niche audience of horror films to be aged 15-20. The age 17 and 18 are the mid-range between the niche of 15-20. I also found out that slasher and thriller are the most favourite sub-genre of horror according to my focus group interviews. This means that my trailer must show elements from both sub-genres of slasher and thriller where possible. Also the focus group all said that the dark scenes, fast-pace editing and the text-on-screen in trailers are all encouraging elements to make them want to watch the film. This means that I must include them in my trailer in order to make it appealing to the focus group. Along with this, I found out that the focus group like to see blood, an antagonist character and dull scenes which means all of the following must be present in my trailer. I also found out that the focus group noticed that there was a lot of close ups used in the trailer in order to show fear. This means that my trailer must consist of many close ups in order to create fear, tension and panic. Also the editing must be fast like it is in all other horror trailers which will therefore appeal to the focus group as they all commented on the speed of the editing.

TARGET AUDIENCE INTERVIEWS

Summary of Target Audience Interviews:
I interviewed a mix of both males and females in order to relate to the target audience of horror films as both genders. The target audience all said that their favourite sub-genre of horror film is either psychological or a slasher. This means that when it comes to creating my trailer, there must be elements of psychological and elements of slasher in order for the horror trailer to fully appeal to it's audience. Also, the target audience all suggested that it is conventional for the setting to be in a spooky dark, old and eerie place such as an old house, church, graveyard, forrest or field. However, one person had the idea that if the horror trailer was in a 'normal' house it would put a twist on the trailer as the audience will not expect anything bad to happen. This means that my trailer will probably have a scene at the house in order to appeal to the target audience, as well as it being set in an eerie forrest which will therefore meet the genre conventions of horror. Everyone in the target audience said that they liked to see dark scenes, blood and gore. This means that my trailer must have some use of blood. Also, the majority of the footage must be quite dark in order to give the feeling that something sinister is about to happen which will therefore add tension. Some of the target audience said that they like to see death, antagonist characters wearing masks/make-up as a hidden identity and ghosts. From this, my trailer will include death/torture as well as the antagonist character wearing make-up. The target audience all said that they believe the most effective camera shots used in horror films are close ups and long shots. This is because the close-ups show the fear on the character's face and the long shot characterise the character through the use of mis-en-scene such as costume. Everyone who I interviewed also said that both diegetic and non-diegetic sound is used to add to the impact and therefore create tension. This means that my trailer must have a good use of sound which is relevant to the genre and what is going on in the scene. Everyone in the target audience also said that if the trailer is good then they will more than likely go to watch the film in cinemas. So, this means in order for the film to be successful the trailer must be extremely gripping. The suspense will make the gripping through the use of fast-pace cutting and editing, sound effects, shot types and text-on-screen. All of this must be included in my trailer in order for it to be gripping and therefore appeal to the target audience. Along with this, the target audience also said that by having a good review/rating it will encourage them to watch the film. This means that my trailer and film poster will include a 5 star rating from a Newspaper in order to engage and draw in the audience to want to watch the film.
